Visiting Nicosia and Northern Cyprus
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, with the Republic of Cyprus controlling the southern part of the island and the self-declared Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus in the north, which is recognised only by Turkey. A United Nations buffer zone separates the two sides.
The capital, Nicosia, remains divided and is a fascinating place to visit, with historic streets, museums, shops and architecture reflecting the island's complex past.
