France has some of the best skiing in Europe with a fantastic range of resorts, high altitude skiing, excellent choice of accommodation and slopes suitable for all levels of skiing. Some of the big well known resorts were heavily developed in the 1960's and have constantly evolved with up to date equipment added year after year.
Skiing in France offers a fantastic range of resorts, everything from small and traditional such as Megève, through to purpose built super resorts like Tignes. There are upmarket resorts here too, with Courchevel which is part of the world famous Les Trois Vallées (The Three Valleys) which is a vast resort with superb skiing and is one of the best linked resorts on offer in Europe. Les Menuires, Val Thorens (which is the highest ski resort in Europe), and Meribel are the other major resorts that form the heart of the Three Valleys, each has its own charm with a huge range of facilities, activities and accommodation for all budgets on offer.
The Portes du Soleil ski area is another fantastic ski range, with Avoriaz and Morzine at the centre of this fantastic winter sports paradise which crosses the border into neighbouring Switzerland. The whole area has had major investment in recent years and is now a major destination for a ski holiday in France. The mighty Mont Blanc Massif is a great choice for off-piste skiing and snowboarding, many off-piste boarders and skiers rate it as the best in Europe . Dominated by Mont Blanc, Europe's highest mountain, there are a choice of resorts that run the length of this valley and the most popular and well known is Chamonix. The resort of Flaine is also overlooked by Mont Blanc and along with smaller nearby resots has a great range of slopes to challenge all levels of ability.
France ski holidays offer so much choice for all skiers and snowboarders, take the Espace Killy for example, Val D'Isere one of the most famous ski resorts in the world is linked with purpose built Tignes and offers some of the most challenging and exciting skiing in France, off-piste enthusiasts love it! Tignes sits on the Grande Motte glacier, meaning you can enjoy skiing here very late in the season (it has been known to have good ski conditions in June).
A huge cable car opened in 2003 linking the resorts of Les Arcs and La Plagne creating a fantastic ski resort partnership called the Paradiski linking these two ski giants together. Families love this area which offers a lot of family friendly accommodation and slopes with a choice of small villages and hamlets at various altitudes to stay in. There are a further two major ski resorts in France that have been attracting winter sports fans for many years. The lively resorts of Les Deux Alpes (Les 2 Alpes) and Alpe D'Huez have an excellent ski area and are particular popular with boarders.
