Whether you like history and exploring ancient cities or just like lying in the sun around the pool, Tunisia is a perfect choice. Many of the resorts are open all year round making it a good choice of holiday destination in winter, however, the best weather is between April and October, in the height of the hot summer months temperatures can reach as high as 34ºc, while the mild winters are still much warmer than the UK, where temperatures between 15ºc and 19ºc.
Tunisia is bordered by the Saharan desert in the south and the Mediterranean in the north and is a centre for many different cultures, the vibrant city of Tunis is the capital and it combines the ancient world with the modern. The main historical sites in the city, and around the surrounding area are ruins from the Phoenicians and the Roman Empire, the ancient city of Carthage is a popular site to visit and is situated in Tunis. Another popular site the impressive amphitheatre of El Djem in the south of the country, some parts of the movie Gladiator were filmed here.
Tunisia is not renowned for nightlife, so most hotels offer live shows and traditional festivals, although Hammamet has a selection of discos and lively bars on offer. The main attraction of most resorts are the white sand beaches which are lapped by crystal clear waters, there is over 800 miles of coastline so plenty of quiet spots to choose from. The beaches are great for topping up your tan or enjoying the many water sports on offer, they are great for families too with the shallow waters offering safe bathing for kids.
Tunisia Holidays: Out and about
Eating and drinking is fantastic value for money as Tunisia is outside the Eurozone and your money goes much further. Although there are not many restaurants and bars outside the hotels in the smaller resorts, the newer more modern resorts like Port El Kantaoui and Yasmine Hammamet have grown to offer more choice and even have late night discos. Popular excursions include the places in the Tunisian desert where films including Star Wars and The English Patient were made or have a go at riding a camel or quad biking in the desert. Boat trips operate from Port El Kantaoui and Yasmin Hammamet and are popular with families.
Overall, a holiday to Tunisia provides a great opportunity to relax on sun drenched beaches, whilst at the same time being able to visit some fantastic ancient monuments and travel back in time to enjoy the history of past civilisations.
