North Cyprus is located just 40 miles off the Southern coast of Turkey and it is truly a little piece of paradise basking under the Mediterranean sun. With the islands strategic position and despite the peace and quiet, it has been a witness to many ancient historical events. It was events in 1974 that saw the island of Cyprus divided in two. The southern part is administered by Greek Cypriots, whilst the north by Turkish Cypriots. Holidays in Northern Cyprus are a very different experience to those in the more commercial south. Despite the recent developments in the island, North Cyprus still retains its charm and natural beauty. The area is home to the indigenous Turkish-Cypriot population, the local language is Turkish and the currency is the Turkish lira. Many traces of the British remain, as many people speak good English and driving is still on the left-hand side of the road. Hospitality is very much a way of life here, holiday in North Cyprus and you will find that you are treated very much as a long-lost friend.
Holidays to North Cyprus have become much more accessible with many operators flying to Larnaca in the south and the border now open to crossing, meaning regional UK departures are widely available. So whilst enjoying the sheer serenity of North Cyprus holidays, you should also take the time to visit Nicosia, or Lefkosa in Turkish, it is the capital of both sides of the island and the last divided city in the world. The market is a great place to stock up on souvenirs such as lace work, rugs and hand-painted pottery, and there is plenty of fascinating history to explore as well.
