A United Nations buffer zone is between the two areas and in recent years it has been made possible to cross this area and visit the old port of Kyrenia or the walled town of Famagusta and excursions are on offer in the resorts.. The southern part of the island is still known as the Republic of Cyprus. The republic was proclaimed on the 16th August 1960 after independence from the UK, it is a member of the United Nations, the Commonwealth, the Council of Europe and the EU. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is only recognised by Turkey.
