Which Tropical Escape Is Right for You?
When the British winter arrives and the days become colder, darker and considerably wetter, there’s nothing quite like having a tropical holiday to look forward to.
But where should you go for that all-important dose of winter sunshine?
Two destinations consistently sit at the top of the wish list: the Maldives and the Caribbean. Both promise beautiful beaches, warm seas and luxurious hotels, but the holiday experience can be surprisingly different.
So, Maldives or Caribbean this winter? Here’s our guide to choosing your perfect escape.
Choose the Maldives for… barefoot luxury and total relaxation
Picture powder-soft white sand, impossibly clear turquoise water and your own villa just footsteps from the Indian Ocean. The Maldives is the definition of a switch-off-and-relax holiday.
Most resorts occupy their own private island, creating an wonderfully peaceful atmosphere from the moment you arrive. Spend your days snorkelling over colourful reefs, enjoying long lunches overlooking the ocean, relaxing at the spa or simply doing absolutely nothing beside the pool.
And, of course, there are those famous overwater villas.
For couples, honeymooners and anyone celebrating a special occasion, waking up above the Indian Ocean and stepping straight from your villa into the warm water is difficult to beat.
The Maldives is perfect for:
Honeymoons and anniversaries
Romantic couples' escapes
Luxury winter sunshine
Snorkelling and diving
Spa and wellness holidays
Travellers who genuinely want to slow down
Winter is also one of the most popular times to visit. December through April generally brings the Maldives' driest weather, with plenty of sunshine and warm temperatures.
Choose the Caribbean for… beaches, atmosphere and adventure
If your perfect tropical holiday involves gorgeous beaches plus plenty to see and do, the Caribbean could have the edge.
The first thing to remember is that there isn't really one "Caribbean holiday". Every island has its own personality.
You could enjoy the laid-back beaches and famous hospitality of Barbados, discover dramatic scenery in Saint Lucia, escape to the beautiful shores of Antigua, or combine incredible beaches with the rhythms, flavours and culture of Jamaica.
While spending your entire holiday on a sunlounger is certainly an option, there's usually plenty tempting you away from it.
Think catamaran cruises, waterfalls, rainforest adventures, colourful towns, local restaurants, rum tastings and spectacular sunsets.
The Caribbean is perfect for:
Couples, families and groups
Travellers who like to explore
All-inclusive holidays
Beach holidays with activities
Food, music and local culture
Island hopping and twin-centre adventures
Winter is prime time for many Caribbean islands too, making it an excellent choice for escaping the UK weather.
Which has the best beaches?
We're calling this one a draw.
If your idea of paradise is white sand meeting unbelievably clear turquoise water, the Maldives is very difficult to surpass. Many islands look exactly like the photographs — and sometimes even better.
The Caribbean offers considerably more variety. You'll find long sweeps of white sand, hidden coves, palm-fringed bays and dramatic volcanic scenery depending on the island you choose.
For pure castaway-island perfection, we'd lean towards the Maldives.
For beautiful beaches combined with a destination you can get out and explore, we'd choose the Caribbean.
What about families?
Don't make the mistake of thinking the Maldives is only for honeymooners.
There are some fantastic family-friendly resorts with kids' clubs, family villas, watersports and all-inclusive options. For children who love swimming and marine life, snorkelling in the Maldives can be unforgettable.
The Caribbean, however, gives families an enormous amount of choice, from large all-inclusive resorts packed with activities to smaller luxury properties and spacious family accommodation.
The right answer depends much more on your family and how you like to holiday than the destination itself.
And for couples?
This is where the Maldives really shines.
Private islands, sunset dinners, overwater villas and peaceful beaches make it one of the world's great romantic destinations.
But couples wanting a little more nightlife, sightseeing and atmosphere may prefer the Caribbean. You can spend the morning on the beach, explore during the afternoon and head out for dinner and cocktails in the evening.
Maldives or Caribbean: our verdict
The good news? There isn't a wrong answer.
Choose the Maldives if you're dreaming of:
Peace + privacy + incredible water + barefoot luxury.
Choose the Caribbean if you're looking for:
Beautiful beaches + culture + activities + more opportunities to explore.
And if you're still undecided, that's exactly where a good travel agent comes in.
