Ski holidays in Switzerland offer breath-taking Alpine scenery, world famous high altitude resorts, and in some resorts, the possibility of all-year-round skiing and snowboarding. If you are looking for glitzy-glamour, sophistication, and celebrity-spotting then the resorts of Gstaad, St Moritz and Verbier will appeal. If you prefer better value-for-money, there are dozens of other ski resorts and family-oriented villages to choose from in the Swiss Alps.
Close to the eastern border with Italy is one of the world’s finest and best known ski resorts - St Moritz. Here the stunningly beautiful, picture-perfect Elgadine Valley offers an excellent choice of ski slopes and off-piste runs, as well as lively apres-ski scene and stylish shopping facilities. The southern Jungfrau Region boasts three fantastic areas - the Eiger, the Monch and the Jungfrau – all of which reach high into the clouds to almost 4,000m. Here there is an extensive choice of skiing that caters for all abilities. The area has some great resorts, including the popular Wengen and Murren, both of which are really easily reached thanks to the region’s excellent mountain train system. Grindelwald is the largest ski station in the Jungfrau Region, with access to over 210 km of piste, particularly around the north face of the Eiger. It also has a wide choice of places to stay and a very lively night life après-ski scene too.
Verbier which is another well know and popular resort, is found in Switzerland’s southern-most Alpine region, where skiers can enjoy over 400 km of piste, with a lively village centre offering great restaurants, busy bars for après-ski and a wide choice of accommodation. Zermatt sits under the might Matterhorn mountain, it has an excellent choice of runs and is probably the best all round ski resort in Switzerland. With some outstanding runs, it is also the most popular resort with skiers too.
Switzerland - Away from the slopes
Away from the slopes there is the chance to experience the really stunning side of Switzerland. You have the chance to explore the many beautiful mountains and lakes taking in huge glaciers and waterfalls too. The efficient mountain trains offer many routes which allow you to view the stunning scenery at leisure. The resorts and towns also cater for non-skiers and activities range from from ice-skating, to indoor swimming to paragliding.
