Marmaris is one of the premier holiday resorts in Turkey with many repeat visitors returning year after year. It is set in an almost landlocked bay. Islands pop up everywhere in the crystal clear sea and are backed magnificently by the pine clad mountains that run down to the sea. Marmaris is a resort that combines natural beauty with an astounding zest of life. The old town is a maze of twisting little streets and alleys with whitewashed houses in Turkish style amid an excellent shopping bazaar. At first sight Marmaris looks a bit like the eastern Mediterranean’s answer to Nice or Marbella. There’s a definite ‘Riviera’ feel to the place, elegant palm lined promenades run along the waterfront, and the marina claims to play host to a large collection of private yachts. But scratch the surface and traditional Turkey is never far away.
Marmaris was a small port with a 16th-century Ottoman castle keeping guard over the cobbled alleyways of what is now the old town. In more recent times the whole area has developed into a smart marina that is surrounded by chic restaurants and boutiques. Many cruise lines have weekly stopovers in Marmaris. This former fishing village in south-western Turkey is famous for its water sports such as diving and sailing the marina and harbour offer a cosmopolitan stopping place for cruiseliners. This historic area has plenty of ancient sites from empires including the Persian, Roman and the Ottomans.
The main tourist areas have a wealth of activity with fantastic facilities. Hotels range from no frills to 5* ultra luxury, eateries range from street stalls to international restaurants and of course you will find an Irish Bar in Marmaris. The seafront promenade is the main focus of the resort; it runs from the harbour area all the way to the neighbouring resort of Icmeler and is backed by numerous hotels, restaurants and bars it is a very pleasant place in which to take a stroll and watch the sunset. In recent years the major of Marmaris has redeveloped the seafront and it has a much more pleasant feel with fountains, new hotels as well as bars with gardens having been built.
Marmaris holidays are perfect for shoppers; the famous Grand Bazaar sells just about everything you can ever think of, spices and leather goods offer great value for money and are always popular purchases. If all this shopping makes you thirsty stop at a one of the many cafes and try some Turkish Tea or a kebab stand and have a real donor kebab! If the Grand Bazaar is not enough there are two weekly markets in Marmaris as well as one at Icmeler and another in the village of Turunc which can be reached via water taxi. Old men sit in the shade playing backgammon just yards from the sophisticated bars of the seafront marina.
After a long hot day on the beach or around the pool, it is time to sample the nightlife. And the resort of Marmaris is famed for its nightlife, the most extravagant on the entire south coast, this developed resort offers the best of both worlds; the nightlife is unending, and numerous clubs and bars stretch along the coast from the elegant marina to the curve of Icmeler, the smaller resort close by. The most popular area for clubbers is Bar Street, where you will find a number of nightclubs offering all the latest tunes until the small hours. There are also some lively bars on the seafront of Marmaris that offer disco or karaoke too. There are hundreds if not thousands of restaurants to try in Marmaris with everything from fast food to boutique dining overlooking the marina. All budgets are catered for with international fast food chains or kebab stalls also very reasonable. Some of the best food is in traditional Turkish restaurants where you can try all the local delicacies including stews and stuffed peppers. The resort is perfect for all age groups and is one of the most popular resorts in Turkey. Try a holiday in Marmaris.... you might be surprised!
